some basic information

What I’m Looking For…

I am currently interested in Artist-In-Residencies as well as short term teaching opportunities, (weekend – 3 months). I am willing to travel and if necessary, I can live in a tent for extended periods of time. Please contact me with any ideas that may come to mind.

the short and sweet version…

born in the midwest in the early 1950’s, high school in the mid to late 60’s, some college, then some time in the military, got married, then more college, got divorced, then worked, then some grad school, then married again and a family and more work… divorced again… retired and still making pictures…

a longer version…

as best as I can remember, this is how it happened…

Columbia Heights Sr High School 1969 I had taken summer school classes to get ahead but they would not let me graduate early. My senior year I had four Art classes, one Humanities and a Study Hall. The Art Teacher there at the time was Bruce Rassmussen.

Anoka – Ramsey Community College 1969 – 1971 I took classes in Art, Philosophy and Literature. Nothing memorable.

US Air Force 1971 – 75 A four-year paid vacation, three of them in Germany. I traveled and taught myself photography. Bought a couple of Nikon F2s and a bunch of lenses. A good time was had by all!

Minneapolis College of Art & Design 1975 – 78, 80? 82? Great time, great school, great people! Photography, Printmaking, Video, Art History, and others with made-up names… Worked in the equipment crib, taught summer classes… Made friends, made art… I worked with Richmon Haire, Arthur Tsuchiya, Kinji Akagawa & Siah Armajani as well as a few other great teachers…

University of Minnesota 1978 – 84 evening classes – Art History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Psychology, Chinese…

Minneapolis Institute of Arts 1982 – 84 I made videotapes for special exhibitions as well as the permanent collections. Learn by doing! I learned a lot of art history and anthropology by making these tapes, and a lot about making tapes…

Visual Studies Workshop 1984 – 98 I managed the Media Center, taught video production in community workshops as well as the MFA program, curated media arts exhibitions and developed a number of re-grant programs for media artists. I worked long hours for a long time and made very little of my own work… I hope people appreciated the effort…

Media Alliance, New York 1984 – 91 Member of the Board of Directors. I sat on a committee that reviewed applications to the “On-Line” program. This program gave artists access to high-end post-production facilities. I was able to see vast amounts of wonderful video/media work.

SUNY @ Brockport 1986 – 98 As part of the position at VSW, I was a faculty member in the MFA Program for SUNY Brockport. I developed and taught courses in video production, computer animation and whatever else got thrown in the mix.

SUNY @ Buffalo 1995 For one semester I taught at SUNY Buffalo in the Media Studies Department. They had Amiga Computers at the time and that is what I had been using, so… there you go… Crazy place…

Syracuse University 1993 – 99 This was an interesting time… I thought I wanted and needed a real degree… I worked with John Orentlicher, Tom Sherman, Michael Recht and Adrienne Salinger in the Art/Media Studies MFA Program. It was in this environment that I started to make video and photos again in a more intense way. I was also teaching under-grad classes in video. In 1996 I transferred into a Humanities PhD program and it was at this point that I decided that I had had enough of the academic world for a while and left/dropped out/quit…

Arts Council for Wyoming County 2000 – 01 My primary activity here was a re-grant program, get money to the artists. There were budget problems and my position was eliminated…

self – employed 2001 – present After the Arts Council I decided that I did not want to work for anyone else again… some short things, sub @ the local high school, the 2010 Census… for a couple of years I had an organic grocery store… that died fast when gas hit $4.00 in 2008…

Currently I offer copy and reproduction services for artists, custom printing for other photographers, mat and frame works on paper.  I am also available for short and long term documentary projects.

exhibitions…

I haven’t shown a lot. I was never that interested. Since I was not teaching I never got on the merry-go-round of I’ll show yours if you show mine circus… But, there have been a few and I am interested in more now…

a lot of small group shows 1976 – 84.  While in school at MCAD and after I was in numerous shows around the Minneapolis / St Paul area. I was showing video, photography and drawing. There was one video screening with the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program, a few at University Community Video and one of the last before I left the area at the Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota. It is too long ago to remember all of them…

after arriving in Rochester 1984 – 98 There was Portable Channel, Pyramid Art Center, Hallwalls, CEPA, Colgate U, Alfred U, SUNY @ Brockport, SU and VSW… I’m sure a few more…. I was showing video, photography and some photo/computer work.
